April 24, 2018 – Bangor, Maine – Two members of Bangor International Airport’s airfield maintenance team recently brought home top honors for their performance at this year’s International Aviation Snow Symposium.
The 52nd annual NEC/AAAE International Aviation Snow Symposium was presented by the Northeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives and the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Focused exclusively on airfield snow removal and winter operations, the purpose of the event each year is to provide new educational programs, more opportunities for networking, and a variety of ideas about winter operations. This year, representatives from 25 airports attended the event.
BGR Airfield Maintenance Technician James Scripture brought home the top prize in the 2018 Snow Plow Rodeo. Scripture, who has worked at the airport for 16 years, came in second place in the 2017 rodeo.
Rodeo competitors are judged first by how well they prepare their equipment for the course, in addition to their skills as an operator, all while working against the clock.
“It’s all about controlling your ride under pressure and being cool in the saddle like a real cowboy,” according to the symposium’s website.
For BGR Airfield Maintenance Mechanic Kevin Severance, who also has worked at BGR for 16 years, it was all about thinking outside the box.
Severance’s ingenuity in developing a flatbed truck that converts to a dump truck – making the vehicle more versatile and useful year round — earned him a third place finish in the Idea Corner competition.
“Although the more than 100 inches of snow BGR received this year wasn’t a record, our crews work hard year round to ensure that our runways remain safe and clear for the pilots and passengers who access our airport at all hours of the day, 365 days a year,” said Bangor International Airport Director Tony Caruso. “Our snow crews are top-notch and it’s no surprise to us that James and Kevin stood out among their peers from airports across the country.”
